Three years later, Catherine plotted unsuccessfully to assassinate a Protestant leader, sparking the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of 20,000 Huguenots, and rekindling the religious wars. CIVIL WAR SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS: K08362 - Antiques, Collectibles (K08362) A set of nine Civil War surgical instruments in portable, wooden case. Carved with the initials “E.M.S.” and a star. The hinge of the case is slightly bent, otherwise in good condition. A fascinating battlefield relic! 16.8 x 5.8 x 3.5 cm. Battlefield surgery during the Civil War was brutal. Most of the doctors had only two years of medical training; they were often referred to as "butchers" by their patients. Yet they managed to successfully treat a great number of the overwhelming casualties sustained throughout the war. The greatest threat to the Civil War soldier was not, as one might expect, enemy weapons. Rather, the soldier’s greatest foe was disease, both in the field of battle and post-operation recovery. After the 1860s, personally signed free franks become rarer due to increased use of secretarial signatures, signature stamps, and pre-printed envelopes. The cup is 4 1/4 inches wide, and is in great condition. The saucer is 6 inches wide and unfortunately has a chip and a crack running from the chip. For one thin dime you could indulge yourself in a luxurious spray of your favorite perfume. One of the cleanest examples of these machines that we've seen, this unit is being sold as complete but untested. The unit is in very good condition, especially the enamel. It shows moderate wear, but considering the heavy use these machines got, it's really in very good shape. No heavy scratching, and virtually no paint loss, except on the base, which is evident in the photos. Retains the original marquee, which is missing more often than not, and that is also in very good condition. It's difficult to find these units complete anymore, and finding one this clean is even harder! It tells of whiskey rations and cold fingers, scavenging for wood and help from local negroes, making coffee in the middle of the night and Rebel prisoners, and "the solemnity of a battle". Includes company history, roster, military records and copies of orders and reports. Brown cloth, 131p. Inscribed by the author. This Orb was discovered in the small city of Daiyan, in the Sichuan province of China, which was famous for it's silversmiths, before the invasion of china by the japanese forces in the late 1930's. It was discovered in an old building, amongst the debris and rubbish in 2004. Important to note: The silver content is estimated to be approx: 90%. Note the exquisite workmanship of this item in the attached photos. Chinese "ORBS" were used in the 19th century for lighting as well as incense burners and were possessed by the wealthy aristocrats of that era. The condition of this item is very good considering it's age as well as the circumstances under which it was found. In my three years of travel throughout China, it is the only one I have ever seen, which will attest to it's rarety. CHINESE "INK STONE" - Antiques, Antiquities An amazing chinese "INK STONE" as displayed in the attached photos. Nothing was more prized by the famous chinese caligraphers than the specially designed "INK STONES". The only way to establish their authenticity is by the seal imprinted on the bottom of each one.This particular ink stone was discovered near Chongqing several years ago and is in exceptional condition considering the approximate date of it's origin. There is a very small chip off the cover, but is not noticable and does not effect the overall quality of this piece. Ink stones are quite heavy for their size so it is with that in mind that sometimes will reflect the high cost of shipping them, this combined with the brittle nature of these pieces requires very careful packaging to insure against any possible breakage. Certainly a wonderful example of a classical table from the Boston market circa 1820. This Classical Ormolu-Mounted and Part-Ebonized game table is constructed of mahogany with mahogany veneers. Having folded top with molded edge on cockbeaded conforming table resting on a circular veneered pedestal with die-stamped gilt brass lead-filled mounts all on a platform and four molded scrolled legs ending in brass hairy-paw feet on original casters. Although it apears to have a restored finish, this table is absolutely structurally unaltered and in a wonderful state of preservation. The base of this table is a statement in and of itself. There exists a slight taper to the top of each leg that shows the attention to detail of this cabinet maker. A rare find! Measures 37 wide by 29 high by 24 deep. CHIPPENDALE TWO-OVER-TWO DRAWER CHEST - Antiques, Furniture Dimunitive Chippendale chest of drawers constructed of Mahogany with white pine secondary woods. This piece offers two drawers over two drawers having a molded top above and rests on a bracket base. The brass pulls are later replacements. The small scale of this chest makes it very desireable and can work in many locations in your home. Dates to circa 1800. Has had no restoration or repairs. Offers a nice old patina. CONNECTICUT CHERRY OXBOW CHEST - Antiques, Antiques Cherry oxbow bureau having four nicely graduated, blocked end drawers. This chest offers an appropriate overhang to the top as well as good overall proportions measuring 38 inches at the case (40 3/4 inches overall) with a case depth of 17 3/4 inches and an overall height of 32 1/2 inches. Brass pulls are period replacements. Proportionally, this is a top level example of an oxbow chest. This would likely be considered a transitional chest given the ending in a french footed base which is completely original. Connecticut circa 1800. Measuring 10 1/4 by 9 1/2 wide CELADON SHRIMP DISH - Antiques, Antiques Celadon Shrimp Dish dating to the turn of the 20th century as indicated by the CHINA stamp on the underside. This is an example of a classic Shrimp plate form and decoration of an earlier period. It has the proper decoration with s slightly different tone. Very difficult to differnetiate this plate from a period plate from the surface paint and color. The stamp on the underside is the indicator of the age. The edge is in in very good shape with no rim chips. Measuring 10 3/4" by 10" This dish is a very close companion to the additional Celedon Shrimp dish listed on our site.
