Therefore, she ignores all the incidents of murder and theft perpetrated within the borders of Israel on the responsibility of the Arab Legion which is sustained by British money and commanded by British officers. Octavo. January 19, 1954 from Sde Boker. The letter reads, in full: “Dear Comrade, The belief that old ways were somehow superior to the present is a useless legend. It was not better, neither materially nor politically. This of course is not to say that today is perfect; this is certainly not my assumption. Indeed, there is a lot to be desired. In full: "Most people, upon aging, are used to viewing past times within a halo of glory and longing for the “good old days.” Viewing the past with amazement and the present with disappointment is not right, especially when relating it towards our movement. I am at present with young people - conquerors of the desert, brave pathbreakers, of whom our distinguished poet H.N. Bialik wrote in his poems –‘may my portion be with you.’ ” Ben-Gurion was keen to realize that the future of the State (and ultimately the success of the Zionist enterprise) rested with the highly-structured configuration of the Jewish youth movements... In full: "To continue our recent conversation, the concentration of the industrial belt along the central shore strip constitutes a severe danger to the future of our state and our people in the event of a future war. The upper Galilee, and particularly the expansive spaces of the southern portion of the country and the Negev are all empty. DAVID BEN-GURION TYPED LETTER SIGNED:K08639.17 - Antiques, Judaica (K08639.17) Asserting that the Bonds Between Israeli and Diaspora Jewry Cannot be Severed One page in Hebrew on official letterhead stationery, with Israel state seal embossed at the head, to Yonatan Shelach. Octavo. May 13, 1955. The letter reads, in full: “Distinguished Poet, Your letter resonates the opinions of the ‘Canaanites’, as though the State of Israel has nothing in common with the Jewry in the Diaspora -- this notion is not worthy of the paper on which it was written. Of course, Jews in Israel do not have to be [should not be] like the Jews in the Diaspora, to be like them one must live in the Diaspora, and this constitutes an unsound and dubious ideal. In Israel, an exclusivist/unique type of Jew has arisen, and a new type of culture is evolving. Still, our dissimilarities are an altogether separate issue from our shared faith.... Octavo. June 18, 1955. The letter reads, in full: “Greetings, Here in the Knesset, we often hear representatives of the opposition parties speaking in the name of ‘the people’. We ostensibly have here ‘the people’ of Herut and ‘the people’ of Mapam and ‘people of Maki’ [the Israeli Communist Party]. In full: “Congratulations on the 30th anniversary since the establishment of the Working Youth [Movement]. The goals of our youth in this generation have not ended with conquest and realization of our independence. DAVID BEN-GURION TYPED LETTER SIGNED:K08639.28 - Antiques, Books, Manuscripts Reaction to the United Nation’s condemnation, glorifying Israel’s isolated position BEN-GURION, DAVID. Typed Letter Signed, as Prime Minister, 1pg, Jerusalem, January 3, 1956, in Hebrew, to Yitzhak Raphael. “As you were surprised by the results of the recent UN voting - [these results] indeed reflect our isolation. I must say that I am surprised with this “discovery” of yours. Of course we are on our own (in this world), although we do have some friends here and there. By our very essence, we are simultaneously the most isolated nation and the most universal one (and there are many historical references for these two assumptions). This very contradiction is the thing that makes us so exclusively unique as a Nation as well as a State. Due to this contradiction we have enemies as well as friends among [all) the nations of the world. As I see things, let us not trust our friends so much nor should we fear our rivals so much. Typed Letter Signed as Prime Minister, 1pg, Jerusalem, January 11, 1956, in Hebrew, to prominent Israeli diplomat Ehud Avriel. In full: "I have read your letter. We must remain in high regard and win over the sound opinion of the American leadership. They are the greatest democracy in the world. Still, we should hold in higher regard the righteousness of our way. An American leader in the future could say, after a failure, “I made a mistake. I did not understand the real intention of the Arab leaders.” We cannot afford to make mistakes on this decisive issue nor can we allow any power in the world to compel us to make fateful mistakes.... Typed Letter Signed, 1pg, Jerusalem, May 19, 1956, in Hebrew, to Knesset Member Meir Yaari. In full: "We do aspire for good neighborly relations with Egypt, I have no doubt in my heart that such friendly and peaceful relations with Egypt would be advantageous and a blessing for both People(s), I really want to hope that after the unsuccessful attempts (of the Arab leaders) to involve their nations in military adventures against us -the eyes of the Egyptian leaders will open and they will be able to see that the war path will bring nothing of benefit to them, thus they should accept the Israeli hand offering a real peace and an alliance between neighbors. In full: “I read your letter and I do not agree. In my opinion, President Eisenhower sees the existence, security, and prosperity of America as dependent on the existence, security, and prosperity of all free countries -including our tiny state. DEMILUNE CONSOLE TABLE - Antiques, Antiques Federal Inlaid demilune console table top having crotch mahogany veneers with sting line inlay. Edge banded front and back with mahogany veneer. Wonderful crotch grained mahogany veneered skirt and a molded edge with a patera oval inlay in multiple colors atop each of the four legs. Four tapering square legs with mahogany veneers on all sides. Ending in a stepped molded edge foot ended in a brass casing. This piece has what appears to be (heavily oxidized) yellow pine secondary wood which may place this as a mid-Atlantic (possibly Baltimore) table. When flipped over the table has five inset boards which are recessed into the pine top for stabilization. There are veneer replacements to the front and back edges as well as some areas of the legs. We acquired it in this condition and it appears to have been professionally restored and French polished. This is a very unusual table that could be a feature piece in a dining room or a foyer. Could easily serve as a server or small sideboard.
