The teacup set is the Regent shape. The trio was made by Shelley Potteries, England between 1933-1940. It bears a registry date for 1933 also. Born in Tuckahoe, Maryland to an unknown white father and a slave. Originally named Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, he assumed the name Douglass after his escape from slavery in 1838. In 1841, Douglass successfully addressed a Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society convention and was employed as its agent. He wrote the "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" in 1845 to document his experiences and sufferings and to silence those who contended that a man of his abilities could not have been a slave.... United States "Colored" Troops. On May 22, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Order No. 143 establishing the Bureau of Colored Troops. The bureau was responsible for recruiting colored soldiers, commissioning officers to command them, organizing regiments, and maintaining their records. The first regiment of the U.S. Colored Troops was mustered into federal service at Washington, DC on June 30, 1863. The last regiment, the 125th, was not mustered out of service until December 1867. Historical Background Shubael Johnson of Stratford, Connecticut enlisted in 1776, and served in Knowlton’s Rangers. (Nathan Hale also served with this unit until his execution.) The entire unit was captured on November 16, 1776 after the surrender of Fort Washington. Johnson appears again on the muster rolls of the Connecticut Line from 1777-1783 with the rank of Private, apparently having escaped or been exchanged. Mark: underglaze cross Circa 1810 STANLEY POTTERY TEACUP AND SAUCER TORBREX - Antiques, Pottery, Porcelain This lovely antique cup and saucer has cobalt blue decoration with gold trim. The design is a greek key with flowers, and a ruffled looking band. There is also a small group of flowers on the inside of the cup. The bottom of the saucer is marked, but the cup is not. There are no cracks or crazing, but there are two very small chips on the rim of the saucer. They are underneath, so they do no affect the pattern. On the rim of the cup there is a manufacuturing flaw. But it has been glazed over and is not noticeable. Great set and great addition to any collection. Sinclaire built a factory in Bath, N.Y. and started blowing his own glass. Using former workers from Dorflinger and the master gaffer Emil Larson, he began to produce art glass that rivaled Steuben for it's quality and design. Because his colored glass was only produced for seven years it is much more scarce than similar art glass from factories like Steuben. This is a beautiful fan vase in amber. It has a polished pontil. The glass is very delicate and it's amazing that it's survived all these years without being chipped. There are a couple of very small bubbles within the glass. The vase is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks.
